About the Position:

The Fresh Market is seeking a strategic and results-driven VP of Operations Support to join our leadership team. As Vice President of Operations Support, you will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to execute the company’s operational strategy, elevate store performance, drive innovation and ensure cross-functional alignment across key support functions. Your leadership will be instrumental in translating business priorities into effective field execution—enhancing efficiency, guest experience, and long-term growth.

In this role, you will lead operating functions including Retail Communications, Asset Protection, Guest Experience, Labor, and New Store Operations and Maintenance. You will collaborate with different departments including Operations, HR, Finance, Merchandising, and Marketing to ensure initiatives are seamlessly executed at the store level. This position requires a forward-thinking leader with a deep understanding of grocery operations and a passion for building high-performing teams that drive results and consistency across the organization.  

Objectives for the role:

  • Provide clear strategic direction and leadership to five Directors managing essential support functions.
  • Foster alignment across Operations, HR, Merchandising, and other key departments to streamline execution at the store level.
  • Drive performance metrics and accountability across support functions to improve operational efficiency and guest experience.
  • Champion initiatives that support a culture of safety, service, and operational excellence across the company.

Lead and Align Key Support Functions:

  • Guide and support the leaders of:
    • Retail Communications – ensuring store teams receive timely, clear, and actionable information.
    • Asset Protection – driving safety, shrink reduction, and compliance.
    • Guest Experience – elevating guest service and satisfaction across all touchpoints.
    • Labor Managementoptimizing workforce planning, productivity, and scheduling.
    • New Store Operations – executing smooth store openings, remodels, and transitions.
    • Maintenance – ensuring store maintenance strategies support safety, efficiency, brand standards, and minimal disruption to store operations.

Innovation Leadership:

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and forward-thinking across all support functions.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve team efficiency, and remove friction in store operations.
  • Encourage cross-functional collaboration to pilot and scale innovative ideas that improve both team member and guest experiences.

Operations Technology Strategy:

  • Partner with IT and business units to identify, implement, and enhance operations tools and technologies—including systems for task management, scheduling, communication, maintenance tracking, and frontline engagement.
  • Ensure technology solutions support field execution, drive efficiency, and are user-friendly for store teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Serve as a strategic partner to senior leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure support initiatives align with broader company goals.
  • Coordinate efforts between departments to improve store execution and eliminate friction in communication and implementation.

Strategic Oversight & Performance Management:

  • Set clear goals and KPIs for each function under your leadership.
  • Use data and reporting to assess performance, identify gaps, and implement improvements.
  • Support change management initiatives and drive adoption across field teams.

Leadership Development:

  • Coach and develop a high-performing team, promoting accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure clear succession planning and leadership pipeline development within the support organization.
Qualifications:

At a minimum, you will need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Finance, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of leadership experience in grocery retail or high-volume multi-unit operations.
  • Experience managing senior leaders (Director-level) across multiple operational functions.
  • Demonstrated success in driving large-scale initiatives and improving operational performance.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to interpret data and drive decision-making.
  • Excellent communicator and collaborator across levels and departments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in grocery, specialty food, or retail industries is highly desirable.
